Short-term recruitment of jawans into the three services of the armed forces for a period of four years, known as Tour of Duty (ToD), is slated to begin soon.

With no military recruitment taking place for nearly two years, there has been tremendous fear among the youth of those places where traditional recruiting is the cornerstone. The Covid pandemic was believed to be the reason behind the delay.

Is ToD, however, a viable concept? What factors go into determining the size of the army? How different is it from the short service commission?
